Bohra Ganesh Temple (Udaipur)

Bohra Ganesh Temple (Udaipur)

Bohra Ganesh Ji is an old and much loved temple of Lord Ganesh in Udaipur, near Mohanlal Sukhadia University. The standing image of Shri Ganesh Ji gives darshan to hundreds of devotees every day.

The name

The temple is believed to be about 350 years old. Local tradition says that in earlier times people who needed money for a wedding or to start a business would ask Ganesh Ji for a loan here and repay it later, as they would with a bohra, a moneylender. From this the deity came to be called Bohra Ganesh.

Why people come

In India nothing new is begun without first worshipping Lord Ganesh, whether it is a business, a new home or a marriage. Families in Udaipur bring the first wedding invitation card to Bohra Ganesh Ji, and students come before their examinations.

Special days

Wednesday is the day of Ganesh Ji, and the temple is at its busiest then, with devotees offering prayers and prasad of laddoo and modak. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated here on a large scale.

Visiting

The temple is in the city, a short drive from Fateh Sagar lake, and is easy to reach by auto or taxi.
