Brahma Temple (Pushkar)

Brahma Temple (Pushkar)

The Jagatpita Brahma Mandir at Pushkar, near Ajmer, is one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator, and by far the best known. It stands close to the holy Pushkar lake.

History

Pushkar has been a place of pilgrimage since ancient times. The present temple building dates mainly from the 14th century and has been repaired and added to several times since.

What to see

The temple stands on a high platform, reached by marble steps. It is known for its red spire and for the hamsa, the swan that is the vehicle of Brahma, over the entrance. The inner sanctum holds the four-faced image of Brahma with Gayatri. On the marble floor is a silver turtle, surrounded by silver coins set into the floor with the names of devotees who gave them.

Kartik Purnima

The most important time of the year is Kartik Purnima, in October or November. Pilgrims bathe in the lake and then visit the temple, and the famous Pushkar fair is held in the same days.

Visiting

Pushkar is about 14 km from Ajmer, which is the nearest large railway station. The temples of Savitri and Gayatri stand on hills on either side of the town.
